The data you collect will identify the patient’s symptoms and you will make a triage decision based on the urgency of the symptoms they present. Triage nurses can experience problems or make mistakes, when they start attaching a medical diagnosis to the symptoms and problems identified.
You only have to do this a couple of times before your credibility and self confidence can start to lapse, and your relationship with the medical staff may begin to suffer. Your practice as a triageur can also suffer as your ‘diagnosis’ may cloud your judgement and limit your assessment. By gaining a nursing diagnosis based on the severity of symptoms, you are more likely to be appropriate and accurate. The response of the doctor is also more likely to be reasonable and responsive.
The difference between triage decision and a medical diagnosis is quite clear.
